Kline May Realty is located in the city of Harrisonburg, Virginia, nicknamed The Friendly City. Harrisonburg is located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley protected by the Blue Ridge Mountains on the east and the Allegheny Mountains on the west. The Shenandoah Valley is known for its beautiful panoramic views, abundant recreation activities, and its wonderfully rich history.

 


 

Harrisonburg City

 

Old Post OfficeThe city of Harrisonburg is the center of commerce and travel for the area. The city was first established in 1780 and named after Thomas Harrison, who donated the land for the local courthouse. The city now encompasses 17.3 square miles and in April of 1990 was declared a first class city. In 1996, the population was about 33,000. Recently the downtown district has been going through revitalization with the editions of new restaurants, museums, and theaters.

Harrisonburg Schools

 

Education plays a very important role in this community. On average 65% of Rockingham County Public Schools students and 75% of Harrisonburg City Public Schools students continue their education after their high school graduation. Students in this area also continue to consistently score higher than state and national averages on achievement tests.

James Madison UniversityRockingham County also is the home of four higher learning institutions. James Madison University is a state-supported school, which has been featured in "U.S. News & World Report" as one of the finest public regional universities in the South. Over 15,000 students are currently enrolled at JMU making it a major economic, social, and cultural factor for the Shenandoah Valley.

Bridgewater College has been a coeducational school since its founding with it being affiliated with the Church of the Brethren. Bridgewater enrolls over 1,100 students who can earn degrees in the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Sciences. It also offers a dual-degree program with Duke University in forestry and Virginia Tech in veterinarian medicine.

Blue Ridge Community CollegeBlue Ridge Community College offers associate degrees, diplomas, and certificate programs to approximately 11,000 students. It also offers a transfer program for those desiring a bachelor degree and an occupational/technical program that prepares students to enter the workforce. 
Eastern Mennonite UniversityEastern Mennonite University offers over 50 undergraduate majors as well as the Eastern Mennonite Seminary with four graduate theological degrees offered. Over 1,400 students are enrolled at EMU from 35 different states and 15 countries. U.S. News & World Report have also ranked EMU in the "Top 10 Liberal Arts Colleges of the South."

 


 

Manufacturing

 

Merck, Inc. PharmaceuticalsCoors Brewing CompanyRockingham County is home for several large manufacturing facilities. Merck, Inc., one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world and Coors Brewing Company are both located in Elkton. The Harrisonburg area is largely employed by various agribusinesses. Rockingham County is rich in agriculture, with over 2,000 farms it is the state's leader in dairy, poultry, and beef products.

The town of Dayton, is home to the local Farmer's Market with over 20 stands that sell fresh cheeses, baked goods, antiques, bulk grains and spices. It is not unusual to see carriages out in front of the market, because about 1,000 Old Order Mennonites live in the area.

 


 

National Forests

 

Blacks RunSeveral National Forests are located within or around Rockingham County offering beautiful views of the valley, hiking trails, and camping sites. Over 139,000 acres in Rockingham County are George Washington and Jefferson National Forests lying in the western part of the county. Also in the area is an entrance to the Skyline Drive. The Skyline Drive is a scenic highway that goes through the 195,000 acre Shenandoah National Park and is 105 miles long. The road was built in 1931 and was funded by the Federal Drought Relief Administration to employ Virginian farmers and apple pickers who suffered from a severe drought in 1930. Skyline Drive draws around two million visitors a year to visit its beautiful panoramic lookouts, hiking trails, and historic sites.

 


 

Tourist Attractions

 

Massanutten Resort offers a wide variety of recreations for area travelers. Massanutten is a four-season resort located at the top of the Massanutten Mountain. The resort offers skiing, snow tubing, snowboarding, golf, swimming, and in the summer months has outdoor concerts.
